Optimized Feed Formulation for Broiler Chickens
A study aimed to evaluate the impact of incorporating hempseed expellers (by-products of hempseed oil extraction) into broiler chicken diets on meat quality.
One hundred fifty broiler chickens were divided into three groups: a control group (HS0) with no hempseed expellers, and two groups fed diets with 50 g/kg (HS5) and 150 g/kg (HS15) of hempseed expellers from 1 to 3 weeks of age. The chickens were slaughtered at 77 days, and meat samples were analyzed for chemical composition, technological properties, and sensory attributes. Benefits of hempseed expellers include their high protein content and bioactive compounds like cannabidiol, which offer antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
Results showed that the HS5 group had higher crude protein and ash content, with more intense breast meat color (higher redness and yellowness). The HS15 group exhibited less tender and softer breast meat but better sensory ratings for thigh meat color.
Overall, hempseed expellers did not negatively affect meat quality or consumer preference, supporting their use as a viable feed component for broiler chickens without adverse effects on performance or meat characteristics.
The crude protein content was analyzed by an OPSIS LiquidLINE KjelROC Analyzer. The protein content was calculated using factor 6.25, which is appropriate for meat. Learn more about our KjelROC Analyzer here >>
